Guide with Us
We’re always looking for fun, fit and fantastically amazing folks to join our team and discover the fame and fortune (of an inner kind) of guiding trips in the canyons of the southwest.
The majority of our business is guiding four-day backpacking trips in the Grand Canyon. We run our own multi-day backpacking trips, and we also operate trips for REI Adventures. Below are links to the REI backpacking trips. Those will link you to great trip description pages to give you an idea of what our trips are like. Due to the ruggedness of the terrain, clients (and guides :) agree to commit to rigorous training to ensure they are able to complete the trip. The trips run April-May and Sept-Oct. We also operate women-only trips.
In addition to our Grand Canyon trips, we also guide day hikes in Buckskin Gulch, 5-day backpacking trips in Paria Canyon, 4-day trips in Coyote Gulch, and run a hiker shuttle for travellers in the area around the Page area.
Regardless of number of clients, there are always two guides for each REI trip with a maximum of 9 clients in the Grand Canyon and 8 in Paria Canyon. Guide are required to have hiked and camped on a route at least twice before guiding it. We require at least 2 training trips (on actual client trips) before anyone is hired as an assistant guide. The training trips are a great way for us to interview each other. We pay $100 for each training trip, and breakfasts and dinners are included. We offer competitive pay. WFR is a prerequisite to begin guiding, but it is not required to begin training.
About our team: many of us have other jobs outside of guiding — teaching, nursing, management, student, etc. Guiding is an opportunity for us to share our enthusiasm for the canyon with others. Many of our guides were once clients, who fell in love with the canyon and have developed a passion for it. Our guides live both close (Flagstaff, Page, St. George) and far (Denver, Salt Lake, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Washington).
